Our commitment to continuous improvement ensures that everyone who walks through our doors leaves stronger, more confident, and more focused.

Kancho Mas Oyama (Founder of Kyokushin Karate)

Kancho Mas Oyama (1923-1994) was a legendary Korean-Japanese martial artist, the founder of Kyokushin Karate, a powerful full-contact style known for its emphasis on intense physical conditioning, discipline, and fighting bulls bare-handed, leaving a global legacy of hard training and resilience. He was famous for his incredible strength, completing grueling tests like the "100-man kumite," and establishing a karate system focused on practical combat, inspiring generations of martial artists and influencing characters like Ryu in Street Fighter.

Key Aspects of Mas Oyama's Legacy

  • Founder of Kyokushin: Oyama developed Kyokushin ("The Way of the Ultimate Truth") in 1964, a style emphasizing realism, no-contact sparring, and pushing physical limits.
  • Feats of Strength: He gained fame for extraordinary feats, including fighting bulls bare-handed and performing the 100-man kumite (fighting 100 opponents consecutively).
  • Intense Training: His philosophy centered on extreme physical and mental discipline, including training under waterfalls and through rigorous conditioning exercises like "Ude Nettam" (arm conditioning).
  • Global Influence: He spread karate globally, teaching in America and establishing the International Karate Organisation (IKO).
  • Godhand: Known as "Godhand," his commitment to breaking barriers through sheer will and power defined his reputation.
  • Osu!: He popularised the term "Osu," a spirit of perseverance and respect in Kyokushin.

His Life & Philosophy

  • Born: Choi Yeong-eui in Korea (1923).
  • Key Studies: Studied Shotokan and Goju-ryu karate before developing his own system.
  • Core Belief: True strength comes from overcoming physical and mental barriers, achieving self-mastery.
  • Impact: His focus on full-contact, knockout-style karate, while initially banning head punches in competition for safety, made Kyokushin one of the most respected and physically demanding martial arts worldwide.
